The origins of this tradition is often linked to Saint Valentine, a priest in 3rd century Rome. According to legend, Emperor Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, believing single men made better soldier. Defying this decree, Saint Valentine secretly performed marriages for young couples. Upon discovery, he was imprisoned and sentenced too death. Before his execution, he reportedly send a letter to his jailer's daughter, Julia, signing it "From your Valentine," an expression still use today.
